This is not groundbreaking insight, but I will pass it on to my daughter:
Never undervalue the ability to say “thank you” to someone in their own language.
-
Listening to my daughter & wife in the living room as I recuperate in the bedroom, the remove is sufficient to underscore the little one’s exponential verbal development. I’m well aware of it, of course, but to hear her fully present is to feel the rapid passage of time anew.

One of the sweetest treats of Thanksgiving this year was watching my daughter interact with her 88-year-old great-grandfather, a Cuban immigrant & doctor who treated Vietnamese refugees at Eglin AFB in the 1970s. That will be a part of her family history that is not lost to time.

Halsten Blækkelien, died 2 October 1868, aged 82 years. Taran Blækkelien, born 25 December 1786, died 29 November 1872. Don’t often see headstones with dates of birth circa the eighteenth century in this part of the country.

Marie's old man doughnuts
Forget boutique doughnuts. Every city needs a good purveyor of what my cousin Grace calls an “old man doughnut,” the kind that costs no more than 80¢ and leaves sweet smelling, mildly greasy fingerprints on your coffee cup. Marie’s is that kind of place, and true to its nature, has no website or social media presence. Even better, the only time it’s not open is 3-10pm daily. I made multiple visits for the coconut, once at 11:30pm on a long nighttime walk around Land Park.

Chops marinated overnight in soy, brown sugar, & rice wine vinegar, pan-seared, & finished in a wind oven. Drizzled with reduced reserved marinade. Accompanied by sesame carrot nests, semi-sticky rice, and an English-style mild.

My daughter saw this shirt in my closet this morning & gave an approving “Ooooooooh! Woooooowwww! Pretty pretty.” I figured I’d better wear it, just in case this is the last time I get that response for a piece of clothing I own.

This beautiful beast lives a block away from our house, and we can often smell it at work on ribs, birds, hot links, and the like. The owner says I need to visit his truck on Tuesdays for smoked pork chop sandwiches.
